Lanphier High School canceled Friday’s football game against Normal University High and next week’s contest against Jacksonville because of COVID-19 protocols.

Five students at Lanphier tested positive for the coronavirus, which includes four on the football team, according to a news release from Springfield School District 186 spokesperson Bree Hankins.

“This decision was made in collaboration with Sangamon County Department of Public Health,” Hankins said in the release. “All five students were asymptomatic at the time of testing.”

The school district has had 34 positive cases all together in the last seven days, according to its web site dashboard.

Hankins added that the vaccinated individuals on the football team who are asymptomatic may continue to attend school and the football coaches “will determine how they will proceed with practices based on the number of unaffected athletes.”

Petersburg PORTA canceled its third straight game against North Mac on Thursday because of COVID-19. North Mac will host Olney Richland County at 7 p.m. Saturday.
